In the summer of 2007 I rode a bicycle over 7000 km from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska to raise money for cancer research. Prior to that, I enjoyed riding my bicycle, but after that summer I was addicted to cycling. In 2008 I began racing bikes and tried jogging a bit, but I ran into some painful issues with my hips and left knee. It seems all of that cycling had caused one side of my pelvis to rotate and began to cause me a great deal of knee pain and I had to stop cycling.
After almost a year of physical therapy and rehabilitation, I was able to ride my bike again, mostly pain free. The last time I visited a doctor, she said everything looked good, but my flexibility was very poor. I became obsessive about stretching after riding and began feeling much better, even as I was riding 650 km per week or more.
When I moved to Taiwan in 2011 I began hiking frequently since it often rains here and cycling in the rain is not fun. But my knee pain quickly returned to the point where it was painful to walk. After trying acupuncture several times and stretching as best I knew how, I remembered my doctor’s words and decided I needed to give yoga a try once again. I had done yoga a bit during the summer of 2009, but it is very expensive in the US, and as a student I did not have much money.
Since I began doing going to yoga in Taiwan, I have not had any knee pain, my flexibility has improved, and my hips feel better than ever. I enjoy studying yoga with 宋廷芳老師 as she focuses on body alignment and posture, which is where I need the most help. She is aware of my injuries and always provides great instruction and advice to help me improve my body as a whole, as well as focusing on my hips and poor flexibility. I still have a long way to go, but enjoy going to class very much.
